Membership Information

Local and National ASCE

You can join ASCE as a local member (i.e., member of the Syracuse University Chapter only) or as a local and national member (i.e., member of both the Syracuse University Chapter and National Chapter of ASCE). You must be a member of the local chapter before you can be a member of the National Chapter. The membership fee for the local chapter is $10 for the duration of your degree program.  The membership fee for the national chapter is free (unless you want your personal copy of ASCE Magazine and ASCE News; in this case you need to pay a $20 per year subscription fee directly to the National Chapter in addition to the $10 you pay your local chapter).

Membership Application

To join the SU chapter of ASCE, fill out a local membership form available in an envelope inside the Department Office. Return the completed form with the local membership fee of $10 to the ASCE Faculty Advisor (E.M. Lui) in Link 151B.  Once you become a member you will be included in a listserv where all pertinent information about the SU chapter will be disseminated. To join National ASCE after you have become a member of the local chapter, fill out a national membership application form on-line by logging on to the ASCE web site here.

Member Benefits

As a member of the SU chapter of ASCE, you are entitled to participate in all local chapter sponsored events and activities for free or at a reduced rate. As a national ASCE member, you enjoy the following benefits:

  • Opportunities to network with other civil and environmental engineering students and practicing engineers.
  • Monthly issues of Civil Engineering magazine and ASCE News, giving you the latest information on technical advances, professionalism, ethics and salaries. (Note: You will receive these publications only if you are willing to pay an extra $20 per year subscription fee to National ASCE.)
  • Eligibility for $75,000 in fellowships/scholarships.
  • Leadership positions on local and national committees.
  • Involvement in activities such as the annual concrete canoe and steel bridge competitions.
  • Timely information about critical issues before Congress that affect civil and environmental engineers.
  • Recognition by prospective employers, who are probably members themselves.
