Upcoming Computing Changes at LCS

Over the next few months, the Information Technology/Computing Support Staff at the L.C. Smith College of Engineering and Computer Science will be transitioning the college's Windows desktop computing environment from a standalone LCS Active Directory environment to an integrated, University-wide Active Directory (AD) computing environment.  The college will continue to support non-Windows desktop solutions such as UNIX, Linux, and Macintosh for our students, faculty and staff.

The move to an integrated AD environment is part of a collaborative, University-wide effort to create a campus computing environment that reflects the standard among our peers in higher education and has come to be an industry standard.  The AD environment will enable our IT staff to offer faster, more reliable, and more secure computing services to students, faculty, and staff, as well as:

  • improve our ability to support a mobile, interactive University community through Microsoft’s Outlook/Exchange e-mail and calendaring system, which works more effectively with smart phones and other mobile devices;
  • provide students, faculty, and staff with more storage space to store files on the SU network and more e-mail storage space;
  • enhance collaborative efforts by making it easier for students, faculty, and staff to share files; and
  • enable clients to have their desktop settings available to them regardless of the computer they use to log into the network.

As our college makes the transition to AD and the Microsoft Outlook/Exchange e-mail and calendaring system, our IT staff will be working directly with faculty and staff to make the transition as smooth and minimally disruptive as possible.

More specific information about the college’s transition to AD will be forth coming as we move closer to our unit’s move date. An overview of the SU Active Directory Project is available on the SU AD Web site at http://suad.syr.edu. Those who have specific concerns or questions can e-mail the CIT Group at help@ecs.syr.edu
